The Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden is turning to the dark side for the latest installment in its Black Box exhibition series. Black Box: Sergio Caballero (3 January 2016) features a 25-minute film by the Spanish artist about the exorcism of a child, called “Anchas es Castilla” or “N’importe quoi”. Told through puppet animation and live action, the film takes its aesthetic and thematic cues from sources like Goya’s “black paintings”, low-budget monster movies and, naturally, the cult classic horror movie The Exorcist (1973), with a sacred and profane soundtrack that includes Bach and electronic noise music. It is the first international museum show for Caballero, who co-founded Sónar, the International Festival of Advanced Music and New Media Art in Barcelona, where the artist is based.
